The most famous Bastille Day Celebration in New York is the annual "BASTILLE DAY ON 60th ST". This year, the Bastille Day on 60th Street will be on Sunday, July 15, 2012 from 12–5pm, at 60th Street - Bien sûr - "of course" , from Fifth Ave to Lexington Avenues. This address is the home of the FIAF , The French Institute Alliance Française, and the most French Corner in all Manhattan. On Bastille Day Celebration, the FIAF promotes lots of French-themed activities for the whole family, French cuisine tastings to Kids Corner. Enter the public lottery and maybe you will win a trip to Paris!

DO NYC LIKE A LOCAL > ALLEZ LE BROOKLYN
Head outside Manhattan to Smith St between Bergen and Pacific Sts, in the nice neighborhood of Cobble Hill, Brooklyn...That's quick ride on the F or G subway train to Bergen St. Station. Smith Street is a hotspot of Franco-Gallic Bistros and they close down the street every year for a huge Block Party for BASTILLE DAY, with lots of French music, French Food, Le Aperitifs et al.
This is also the day and place of the largest pétanque tournament in North America ! Ques que c'est what? Who cares, it's fun to watch ! You will see "professional level" players throwing hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball...It is a big deal, see the video below, Smith Street is covered with tons of beach sand just for the tradiocional competition.... Anyway, our favorite French spots on Smith St. are the Bar Tabac and Provence en Boîte - But be aware, this will get crowed on Bastille Day for sure !
Back in Manhattan, Chef Marc Murphy from the "trés excellente" Benchmarc restaurants is producing a 2 hour Summer Cruises on the Hudson every Tuesday this Summer of 2012 ($60; benchmarc-restaurants.com). For the Bastille Day week, he has created a special French menu and you will be pampered with Amuse Bouché drinks paired with Le Aperitifs while enjoying live entertainment in honor of Bastille Day.
Also, Le Restaurant Beaumarchais will be trowing a Brunch Party to celebrate Bastille Day. Enjoy French-inspired dishes and special drinkes before you hit the Petanque Court set up for guests...as they say in French "plus vous en buvez, plus vous jouez"...or the more you drink, the better you play..eh? Maybe it means the more you drink, the more you enjoy it...Well, it's all good !
No Bastille Day would be complete withou talking about Joan D'arc, "The Maid of Orléans", whose Siege of Orléans inspired the Bastille Day and French Independence from England Centuries later...D'arc is perhaps France's the most famous personality of all times and has been immortalized by the works of Shakespeare, Voltaire, Twain, Shaw, Brecht, Verdi, Tchaikovsky and Rubens, among many others.
